A British or Irish winner was assured at the PokerStars UKIPT Main Event in Newcastle, as the final day commenced with those two nationalities contesting the final table. As widely expected, massive overnight chip leader Richard Sinclair maintained his grip on the UKIPT trophy with a display of patient power – allowing his final opposition to take each other on through most of the early exchanges before playing some killer poker when it mattered.
Only an impressive rally by PokerStars player, Raj Verma – recovering from a stack of seven big blinds to amass a 3 million plus chip stack – cast any doubt that Sinclair would fail in his quest to become the first Scotsman to win a UKIPT event. Ultimately, Verma´s Kh Qh came up against Sinclair´s pocket aces and he had to settle for second place and a £40.000 payday.
Sinclair collected £67.000 for his display – enough for his air fare to Las Vegas where he has cashed in the last two WSOP Main Events. A special mention should also be made for Jonathon Gawith, who picked up £11,120 for his £25.00 buy-in to a PokerStars UKIPT qualifier – showing that it can be worthwhile taking this route – and satellites for the next leg of the UK and Ireland Poker Tour in Brighton from July 14th are now underway on PokerStars.
You’ll be-able to watch the whole event unfold on Channel 4 as this and all the events from the 2011 UKIPT are being televised.
