Despite current recession, it seems the fashion at this year’s WPT is to go bigger, better and even deeper into the wallets than ever before. The World Poker Tour has announced a new event to add to their already hectic schedule; namely for the well-endowed bankroll holders, but providing some great entertainment for the rest of us I’m sure.
The $100,000 Super High Roller event will take place as part of the WPT Championships this May at the famed Bellagio casino and hotel, Las Vegas. The first name confirmed as part of this incredible new event is poker giant Erik Seidel. The New York-born millionaire has a catalogue of celebrated wins, in such prestigious events as the WSOP (he holds a record eight bracelets), Aussie Millions, National Heads Up Poker Championship and PokerStars Caribbean Adventure. His total live tournament winnings alone exceed $14,600,000, the stuff poker player’s dreams are made of. Earlier this year, he was named as all-time leading money winner of live tournament poker. Other names which have signed up to play are fellow WSOP veterans Justin ‘BoostedJ’ Smith, and Dan Shak.
Steve Heller, CEO of the World Poker Tour, recently released a statement saying that this event is an opportunity for the poker playing elite of the world to test their mettle against one another. The event is scheduled to last just one week, but the winner will be crowned with one of the most coveted titles (not to mention stratospheric prize money) in the world.
Costing $100,000 to enter, the game stands as a landmark in WPT history as the largest buy-in event ever created. With some of poker’s biggest names already scheduled to be at the Bellagio for the WPT World Championship, the creators are hoping to hook some of the world’s most lucrative celebrity players. I’ll be watching.
