UKIPT Galway Day 1A – 19 of Top 20 are PokerStars Qualifiers

UKIPT GalwayThe incredible success of the UK and Ireland Poker Tour reached new heights yesterday as Day 1A of the UKIPT Galway Main Event attracted 298 players – more than last year´s combined two-day total of 266, and nearly three times as many as sat down in the inaugural UKIPT Galway Main Event in 2010. When the chips of the 136 survivors were counted at the end of the day, 19 of the top 20 chip stacks belonged to PokerStars qualifiers.

Thomas Finneran Leads UKIPT Galway Main Event after Day 1A

Thomas Finneran, currently 39th in the Ireland All Time Money List, leads the way after 8 one hour levels, with almost six times his starting stack. However, the Irishman – who bagged up 89,600 chips – will be disappointed to have fallen back from his one-time stack of 101,000 chips and, when the first hand is dealt on Day 2, Thomas will only have a narrow advantage over UK poker player Emmett Mullin and compatriot George Stoddart.

Big Names Crash from the Start

Joeri Zandvliet was one of the big name players who caught the attention for the wrong reasons. Joeri was unfortunate to see his shove with 6♠ 6♣ on a board of 3 4♠ 5 get called by a player with pocket fours and the UKIPT Dublin Main Event winner from last year was the first player to leave the game. His departure was mirrored in similarly unfortunate circumstances by three times GUKPT winner Julian Thew, last year´s UKIPT Edinburgh Main Event winner Gavin Fintan and the Irish Poker Open winner from 1996(!) Liam “Gentleman” Flood.

More Big Names Will Follow

Previous UKIPT Main Event winners Padraig Parkinson and Gareth Walker remain in the field, and they will be joined by more previous UKIPT winners on Day 1B, as Nick Abou Risk, Max Silver, Richard Sinclair and Sam Razavi are all confirmed entrants. Confirmed also are the love birds of Liv Boeree and Kevin MacPhee, UKIPT regular Rupinder Bedi, WSOP final-tablist Sam Holden and Barny Boatman who – as far as anyone is aware – has no love interest at all!

PokerStars Success Mirrored by Other Poker Sites

Irrespective of who wins the first leg of the UK and Ireland Poker Tour Season 3, one thing is for certain – the success of PokerStars in organising UK (and Ireland) poker tours is being mirrored by other UK poker sites. There has already been mention of the GUKPT and Irish Poker Open, but many other successful tours run throughout the UK thanks to the volume of qualifiers run by UK friendly poker sites. Not all will achieve a 19 out of 20 score in relation to how many qualifiers top the chip counts at the end of the day (Sky Poker Tour excepted), but satellite qualifiers seem to be the way to go for many UK poker players.
