Renowned Nottingham poker venue Dusk Till Dawn may well have sparked an entry frenzy after announcing a guaranteed main event prize pool of £1 million – or about $1,567,047 – for the upcoming second leg of the current PokerStars UK and Ireland Poker Tour (UKIPT).
Yes, you did read that correctly. There is no need to check your eyesight, folks. In fact, Dusk Till Dawn owner Rob Yong was the very person to provide details on this amazing prize pool for next month’s tour stop.
Yong stated on the DTD website that the enormous prize pool “will be both a record for Dusk Till Dawn and the PokerStars UKIPT”, while also stressing that he believes “the poker community” that has given his venue great support “over the last five years…will get behind this £1 million guarantee” event once again.
With expectations high that last year’s 1,058-player field will be easily surpassed, Yong also revealed that there will now be three Day 1 starting line-ups – on the Wednesday, Thursday and Friday – to make space for the expected additional entrants.
Enormous Field Required to Hit Guarantee
Certainly, Yong will be looking for about 1,500 entries so that the prize pool is covered for the £700+£70 buy-in main event that runs from April 11 to 18.
PokerStars will send about 650 via online qualifiers, but that still means Dusk Till Dawn will have to draw in an additional 800-plus players to ensure there is no shortfall to be made up.
Yong said: “We had a meeting with PokerStars this week to finalise the plans for the UKIPT Nottingham leg.
“PokerStars’ online satellite qualifiers have been generating more players than last year and we discussed the potential of an additional Day 1.”
Extra Day 1 Needed to Meet Demand
Yong believes that adding that extra day is essential to the event’s growing success, adding: “Last year, we had 1,058 players but, unfortunately, had to turn some players away and deal 10-handed because we only have a 50-table capacity.
“Increasing the number of Day 1s of the UKIPT means extra costs and workload for PokerStars. However, they have still decided to add an extra Day 1 on Wednesday, 11th April.
“This ensures that every player has the opportunity to play this event and we can still deal the tournament nine-handed.
“To give the best chance of all Day 1s being a success, I have agreed with PokerStars that Dusk Till Dawn will guarantee the UKIPT Nottingham prize pool at £1 million.”
Yong also stressed to the Blonde Poker forum that DTD “wanted to do something special for our players” after recently cancelling a £500 buy-in tournament to give his full attention to the UKIPT stop at the club.
UKIPT President ‘Delighted’ By Huge Prize Pool
Meanwhile, Kirsty Thompson – the UKIPT president – was also excited to talk about the upcoming tour stop, saying: “We are delighted to guarantee a £1 million prize pool for the UKIPT Nottingham Event.
“The UKIPT has seen huge growth year on year, and the £1 million guarantee cements our position as the premium live poker tour in the UK and Ireland.”
The three Day 1s for the main event will run on Wednesday, April 11 – with the opening flight having room for 450 entrants – and then on Thursday, April 12, and Friday, April 13.
Nottingham Qualifiers Up and Running
After the Nottingham stop, players can also look to compete in the other six legs of the UKIPT’s third season in Dublin (CityWest, May 17-21), Newcastle (Aspers, September 6-10), Swansea (Aspers, November 22-26), Edinburgh (Balmoral Hotel, January 17-21, 2013), Cork (Rochestown Park, February 14-18, 2013) and London (venue to be confirmed, March 8-12, 2013).
