It is not sure whether the UK poker players at the WSOP had an off day or a day off! Just for a change, there was not much for the British railbirds to cheer about, with Londoner Frank Peelen performing best for “Poker Team UK” in the Pot Limit Omaha Championship (Event 22) – finishing 12th and collecting $16,511 to make his day worthwhile at the very least.
Andy Black from Dublin cashed in the 8 Game Championship (Event 23) which is now down to a final table of six which includes John Juanda aiming to collect his second WSOP bracelet within a week, and five UK poker players (James Akenhead, JP Kelly, Toby Lewis, Gareth Teatum and James Dempsey) cashed in the “SnG” No Limit Hold´em Shootout (Event 24) – but none were able to reach the final table.
In ongoing games, there is nothing to cheer about in the 7 Card Stud Hi/Lo Championship (Event 25) with not one British representative making the bubble, but the Six Handed NLHE tournament (Event 26) looks far more promising with Jade Cody, Audley Harrison, Neil Channing and Sam Trickett all positioned to make an significant impact on the event. It is still early days in the $10,000 Limit Hold´em Championship (Event 27), with only a handful of players eliminated on Day 1.
Closer to Home
Closer to home, tomorrow (Friday) sees Day 1a of the PokerStars UKIPT £500.00 + £50.00 Main Event and, with most of Europe´s top poker players distracted by events overseas, there is an excellent chance of a domestic victory. Online qualifiers have now been completed, so if you were looking to compete in this valuable event you will have to buy-in directly. There is a good supporting program at the Aspers Casino in Newcastle and, if you are in the area, a good opportunity to witness UK live poker at its best.
PokerStars are now running an online qualifying series for the UKIPT Brighton, which runs from July 14-18 at the Hilton Metropole Hotel with plenty of guaranteed seats on offer.
