The young guns are at it again, with another 21-year-old poker sensation from out of nowhere taking a top title from the hands of some of the game’s greatest. This time the name of the game was the UKIPT Manchester and the name of the barely legal victor, Joeri Zandvliet.
The United Kingdom and Ireland Poker Tour (UKIPT) is one of the most recent land based poker tour innovations from the folks at PokerStars, the masterminds of the European Poker Tour (EPT) and numerous others serving various pockets of the globe.
The UKIPT Manchester event lasted 3 days and featured a main event buy-in of £550 and attracted a playing field of 518. For outlasting all of them, Joeri Zandvliet earned a £63,200 payday. The UKIPT Manchester title almost went to a Brit, Jack Ellwood, but he went out in second place.
Chris Brammar was also a notable face on the final table felt, more so for this UK poker stalwart after having just gone deep in an earlier U.K. & Ireland Poker Tour Manchester preliminary event. And in a telling twist of fate, the “other” young gun at the final table poised to win it all, Dean Lyall, suffered 4 rounds of penalties after having a bit too much too drink.
In the end, it was an even money gambit on Ellwood’s losing Ace-Queen versus Zandvliet’s winning pocket 9s.
Some of the players in the UKIPT Manchester main event avoided paying the buy-in by winning their seat in a PokerStars online poker satellite
Next stop on the UK and Ireland Poker Tour is UKIPT Coventry, and you can still win seats in the event through satellite tournaments running now over at PokerStars.
