The World Cup of Poker enters its preliminary stages this weekend (20th/21st August), and PokerStars is offering every one of its players the chance to represent their country and score a trip to the Bahamas for a share of $290,000.
First Step – Get Selected
In order to “get selected” to play for your country (England, Scotland and Wales have been rolled into one UK team), you have to battle through one of three tournaments hosted on PokerStars this weekend and emerge the victor. Three places are available to UK Poker Players, with a freeroll starting at 5.00pm on Saturday to determine a “goalkeeper”, an MTT at 7.00pm on Saturday with a $1.10 buy-in to select a “defender” and an $11.00 tournament at 5.00pm on Sunday to pick the “midfielder” (All times BST). A “striker” from the 2010 PokerStars Tournament LeaderBoard will win their place in a later Sunday tournament.
Second Step – Help You Team to Qualify
Each “national” team is placed in a group of ten countries (the UK have been drawn in Group 3) with a player from each position taking their place in a 10-player STT on the weekend of 27th/28th August (Goalkeepers play goalkeepers, defenders play defenders and so on). Points are awarded for the finishing positions of each player, and when the totals from the four tournaments are added up, the team with the most points progresses to the World Cup Finals to be held in the Bahamas as part of the PokerStars Caribbean Adventure in January.
Previous Results from the World Cup of Poker
Several teams who have won the World Cup of Poker in the past will not be competing this year. Obviously the Americans (winners in 2007) are out of the picture as all qualifying has to be done online and because of national legislation the French cannot compete (hurrah!) nor last year´s victorious side – Italy. Team Costa Rica hold the record for the most number of World Cup victories (2 – 2004 & 2005), while the other winners have been Poland (2006), Germany (2008) and China (2009). The winning foursome this year will collect a guaranteed $100,000 between them.

Group Draws for the World Cup of Poker
Team UK has a relatively easy group -which is why it is worthwhile trying to get selected for your team! Although we have to overcome the threat of the Irish and previous winners Poland, we have managed to avoid the Spanish, Germans (who we would have lost to on penalties!) and all of the Scandinavian countries. With this draw, there is a great chance to see Team UK competing in the World Cup of Poker finals in January.
