A Mixed Day for the Big Guns

wsop 2011

wsop 2011 updatesMidsummer´s Day had mixed fortunes for the major names in poker´s most prestigious championship series. Eugene Katchalov, Barry Greenstein and Daniel Negreanu (who is donating a portion of his winnings to charity) all hold strong positions in the $10,000 HORSE Championship (Event 37), but Tom Dwan, Eric Lindgren and Vanessa Selbst all busted out in the day´s closing hands of the Six Handed Pot Limit Omaha Championship (Event 35).

Two UK poker players have made it into Day 3 of the Pot Limit Omaha event, with Chris Moorman holding 13th position in the field of 15 that will compete for the WSOP bracelet tomorrow, and Dave “Devilfish” Ulliot in a promising 8th place. Both may find it hard to catch runaway leader Gregory Brooks, who won the biggest hand of the tournament to send Vanessa Selbst to the rail, but with both playing on the same table, and no major chip stack in play amongst their three table companions, the hope is that at least one will make it to the final table and a six figure payday.

There was little climactic action for British supporters to cheer on in the $1,000 NLHE Championship (Event 34), with the top UK poker player – Londoner Scott Shelley – finishing in 22nd, ahead of just a handful of compatriots who cashed in the event. There is still plenty of British interest however in the $2,500 NLHE Championship which resumes with 308 players chasing the title and a first prize of $749,610.

Weekend Poker Action

If the talk of all this poker is inspiring you to get out and experience some live poker yourself, here is a quick rundown of some of the top tournaments happening this weekend.

Friday – Dusk Till Dawn (Nottingham) – This Friday sees the start of a new tournament at DTD – a £50.00 Re-buy with £15,000 guaranteed prize pool and a £1,090 seat in their Monte Carlo final awarded to the winner. 8.30pm start with late registration up until 9.30pm.

Saturday – Fox Poker Club (London) – The last Saturday of the month sees the Foxes first £110 HORSE Tournament at 3.00pm, with 10,000 starting chips and a 30 minute clock. The Shaftesbury Avenue venue has just been granted a 24 hour licence, and if this event is well attended, they might just need it!

Sunday – Napoleons Casino (Sheffield – Ecclesall) If you do not like the prospect of paying a lot of money to get into a game, live up t´North or both, (probably both if you live up t´North!) Napoleons host a Sunday evening freeroll with £500.00 prize money. The minimum cash is £50.00, so well worth getting involved with.

Please note that you may need prior membership to participate in these events (which is why we tell you about them in advance!). Please see each of the club´s web sites for more information on the tournaments and advice on membership requirements.
